Serving The World Poetry
October 29th, 2009 – New York, United States

This was genuinely – no cheating, I promise – the first photograph I took with my new Leica D-LUX 4. I’d bought it in the duty free at Geneva airport, and when I arrived in New York in late afternoon, I headed straight out in the hope of taking a few shots before the daylight faded completely. As you can see from this shot, it was already getting quite dark before I spotted my first potential subject. It’s a testament to the camera’s qualities that the resulting image is – with the exception, sadly, of some of the details of the woman – so crisp.

As for the woman’s laugh, I’d love to be able to say that I had just charmed her with some suitably gallant compliment. But in fact she was unaware I was taking this shot – she’s actually laughing somewhat contemptuously at a man with whom she appeared just to have had an argument, and who was firing back a volley of insults at her as he slunk away into the gathering gloom.

I’m in Zermatt on vacation at the moment – due to leave tomorrow morning, if today’s heavy snowfall and the further snow predicted for tonight don’t block me in. I’ll be catching up on contacts’ streams from tomorrow evening onwards…

Good luck for snowfall, here in Rome we are under tons of rain water…

We’re back at that time of year where I know that you are living the life… grrr. OK so this was October but there are certain times when I’m conscious that you’re out there hunting in a selection of the world’s best cities; and it seems like your photographs exist only to remind me that I have to live one at a time. Don’t go thinking that because I rarely shoot street this isn’t an issue.

If I had to create a stage set for the lower east side this is how I’d want it to look.

you recommend that camera then? Your shots have been inspiring me to purchase the same camera as, like the idea of more portable companion!

This is a fantastic take, love the deep tones!!

  24. She Said Unprintable Things (Away)

The story that you include about the shot just gave me goosebumps. I looked at the shot in the original size, and her smile is chilling! And the light seems to be playing with the story too.

I’ve been considering this camera. But I think I’ll be considering it for a little while longer, and I’d love to see what else you take with it! And where have you been.

  25. DerrickT

I have always wanted to read some of my poems at The Bowery Poetry club. This is a most wondrous photograph, Tom!
