Philosophy & Poetry
A lovely detail from Holiday’s window in Buckland.
It is interesting that he should place philosophy and poetry side by side. The medieval philosopher, Boethius, in his most famous work, ‘The Consolations of Philosophy’ begins with a scene in which Boethius is in his sick bed and surrounded by the muses of Poetry, the passions which assail him.
Lady Philosophy appears and dispels them, thus reason and the intellect is seen to restore health and dispel the harmful effects of the passions and emotions.
This tier of Holiday’s window does not have such clear distinctions, but serves to show the arts and the intellect being brought under Christ.
It is interesting though, that while Philosophy was personified as a Lady by Boethius, here it is poetry who is shown as a beautiful woman, and the Philosophy as a male Greek philosopher…
