He was born in Jacksonville, Florida but, at nine years old, he was given the responsibility to take care of his grandmother in Palatka, Florida, some 50 miles away. He traveled back to Jacksonville to be with his parents each summer. It was at this early age that he decided to be a singer and with the encouragement of his Mother and Grandmother, Johnny began to perform at local functions and on the radio. By the time he entered Palatka Sr. High School, he had quite a reputation as a talented singer throughout the state of Florida. His first television appearance was as a guest on the “Toby Dowdy Show”. Johnny’s performance produced a steady stream of fan mail and resulted in a three year contract as a regular on the country-oriented show. When the “Toby Dowdy Show” went off the air, Johnny had the opportunity to do his own show. He successfully juggled his weekly TV show and his studies at the University of Florida until graduation. It was during these years that Johnny began writing songs. In 1957, a local DJ submitted a tape of Johnny’s singing to the National Pet Milk Talent Contest. Johnny was chosen as one of the 6 national winners from this tape, which afforded him

My friend let me know of this nice one today. Wow, this is so good indeed! I was born in 1955, rather too late to know Johnny Tillotson, but nothing is too late. The world is full of human, peaceful treasures and we humans have the opportunity to share and appreciate them whenever we want thanks to YouTube revolution. I truly feel that we are the luckies generation so we must be the greatest generation as well. eijiro odagiri, columnist at YOKOHAMA NOW

It’s hard to believe that that’s how we (grandparents) looked in the 50′s. I love the song and Johnny’s voice. Thanks for sharing and for bringing back memories of the 67-year old.

Great to hear this oldie. I don’t know when it came out, but I remember the first time I heard it I was about 11. I absolutely adored this song. They played this at the dances at my grade school in summer. They were held out in the parking lot and it for 6th and 7th graders. Wow – I once was in the sixth grade. Thank you for an innocent stroll down Memory Lane. Everyone’s favorite lane.
