How to differentiate from good and bad poetry?

What should I look for? Also, is rhyming good for poetry, or does it distort the language? My teacher hates rhyming, but I like it because it creates a beat and appeals to the senses. Any thoughts?

you have a bad teacher, poetry is ok with rhyming and is ok with out, poetry is how you feel, i am a poet and have won multiple awards and sometimes i rhyme and sometimes i dont, it really doesnt matter, your teacher who ever they may be is bad for saying they hate rhyming poems. but i would say the only bad poem is just one with poor spelling and usage of words, but other than that its all good.

Poetry is about taking advantage of the aesthetic qualities of words. Contrary to what your teacher says, it’s not just any emotional grunt on paper. Certainly, one of the aesthetic qualities of words is the sound, and poets use this characteristic for anything from rhyming to onomatopoeia. If it’s done in a pleasing way, absolutely any literary device is acceptable .. and desired. Apparently, your teacher never bothered to read any rhyming poetry beyond The Cat in the Hat.

Some people aren’t fans of poetry that rhymes….some are. Its all a matter of personal taste. It is upsetting to hear that a teacher is so set against rhyming in poetry. Some of the best poets rhyme in such a way that you don’t even realize they are doing it…it flows so easily.
Good and bad in poetry, again, is a matter of taste. For instance, I really don’t care for Kilmer…she just sets my teeth on edge, but I adore Longfellow (who, by the way rhymes quite nicely and retains the beauty and cadences of language).
Rhythm, in poetry, can be soothing, and comfortable, if the poet is good, and the flow is right. If you like it, the its good poetry! Like a song without music……the voice of the person reading it makes it sound like singing………

For a good poetry it must have a “poetic excellence” expressed in its aesthetic value and quality, artistic language expressed in the proper choice of words, rhythmic measure and harmony and projects an imagery as intended by the poet. A bad poetry is a poetry opposite to a good poetry which is often characterized by blindness and laxity to what is intended by the poet particularly the imagery, etc.

Don’t listen to the first guy, though his self-induced oxymoron is really funny. Remember that everyone wins awards from Poetry.com.

Good poetry focuses on a moment, something clear and well-defined, maturely posed. That moment or image or whatever then corresponds with some greater idea.

Writer (an accomplished poet) Mark Doty defines poetry in terms of a three-tiered structure known as Doty’s triangle. He stresses the model that a good poem must represent itself equally emotionally, image-wise, and intellectually.

Let me know if you want the names of some good poets. Bad poets take Charles Bukowski as their lord and savior. Stay away from his writing.

…poetry is …like ,,tasting…different,,or exotic ..foods….
they agree,or disagree,,,,,,,,,,,,,, with personal taste.. if the words make sense to you…………………… then ,,,take the full course ,,,meal…. and enjoy…

depends on the type of rhyme you use… old macdonald had a farm rhymes… can become tedious and dull. But using internal rhyme can be really good. Personally I think that good poetry creates some kind of viceral reaction, it draws you into the poems world.

I used to jokingly tell people that I wrote poetry to make people either: laugh, do something, scream, pissed off, or cum…
