How can I motivate myself to write poetry? Any tips or exercises that I can use?

I have to take a class on writing poetry, but I can’t seem to think “poetically” at all. I struggle when it’s time to spontaneously write something in class. I write fiction and commentaries well, but I just can’t seem to write poems! What can I do to get my creative juices flowing?

Simple truths, written in simple ways
unclaimed until you find them
right in front of you,
smiling.

Poetry is everything,
everywhere.

I like buks answer, it really is.

poetry has to come from the mind, heart, soul
it doesn’t have to rhyme
but give a message out to people

Been there, done that. I think sometimes we ourselves put this strain on ourselves. I mean, there are so many words, so many ways to enchantingly describe things in ways that are uniquely separate from anyone else’s ways of describing them…but sometimes I think we just don’t feel open enough. Sometimes it’s hard to open yourself up like that to be spontaneous.
Here’s my advice:
Look at any object or thing that really intrigues you (it can be something totally random) or think of a concept that intrigues you. Then think some thoughts or come up with some adjectives to describe them. When you come across an adjective or thought that’s original, that your individual mind just naturally begins to contemplate, start building. If this doesn’t happen right away try just taking all your thoughts and adjectives and combining them in ways that sound pleasing to you. Then when that starts to flow right more should come. Don’t over think. Poetry is meant to be creative and expressive! Be playful, be open to all different sources of inspiration.
