You own the copyright to a poem from the moment you write it. You can pay to register your copyright, but that’s probably not necessary at this stage of your writing career. This site has complete information on U.S. copyright law:

As for publishing your work, the book “Poet’s Market” is full of useful information about publishing opportunities. Most poets don’t publish a book until after they have established a reputation by publishing lots of individual poems in magazines.

You own the copyright on whatever you have made if it is original. This is thanks to something called the Berne Convention. The problem arises when you have to prove that you were the original author of this work.

You can basically have to prove that you were the original author and you must have this backed up independently. You can register your copyright claim online using a service such as and they will independently back up your claim of originality.

This website might be interesting for you because they give you 5Gb of space to upload all your works to for the same price. I think that you would get 1000’s of pieces of poetry up to 5Gb.

Poetry books are bestsellers – they just have to be targeted to the right market. :)

Publishing companies now have all the resources to publish books with the same productivity and efficacy as that of regular black and white books you see in physical bookstores. Considering the fact that most books are in full color, you should choose a publishing company whose book’s are of the highest quality, bar none.

Publishing is synonymous to getting that copyright for protecting your book which is why it is highly important to publish it.

    I wish you luck :)
