PoeticWorks is honored to showcase some of the finest Spoken Word artist and poets in San Diego. PoeticWorks has poetry for everyone. Whether one enjoys reading poetry, listening to or performing spoken word, has a desire to publish one’s own work, or one needs another avenue to sell already published work, this is definately the right place. PoeticWorks pride ourselves in being a community based group of conscience poets with a common goal of empowering, strengthening and uniting the community that can best be achieved with the individual efforts of the collective group. Since PoeticWorks humble beginnings in August 2005, it has proven itself as an organization that can deliver an exceptional show filled with powerful, emotional, and remarkable Poets. Some of San Diego’s premiere Spoken Word artists can frequently be seen performing at our events.

PoeticWorks also call to arms the Poets for the welfare and safety of our children. PoeticWorks has also established an event called CommonUnity Poetry designed to give the youth an opportunity to learn the art of Spoken Word by the finest that San Diego has to offer. Spoken Word Open Mics are held monthly to benefit the youth. All of the donations received from CommonUnity Poetry go directly to this Community Action Project. CommonUnity is held every 2d Wednseday and we are currently seeking a “home” for this event.

There is a new venue in the North County, Oceanside, Ca, that also host a Spoken Word Open Mic. Beginning January 25, at Earth Culture Roots located at 105 S. Coast Highway, PoeticWorks will host a Spoken Word Open Mic from 8-10 pm. This event is free and open to the public and will be held every 4th Wednesday of the month.

PoeticWorks also has several other events throughout the following months that can be found on WWW.POETICWORKS.COM Special Appearance page. You will also be able to see other local events in the San Diego area. A Community Calendar of Events will be put up shortly.

PoeticWorks also has a secure, online bookstore. Here one is able to purchase tickets to local events as well as buy books (CD’s will soon be sold here) from artists and musicians. PoeticWorks also offers Poets and Artists the opportunity to sell books and CDs through the bookstore for a small fee.

After their meeting at Camp Lejeune, Jon Proechel and Patricc Reed were assigned to the same six-month “float” in the Mediterranean. “We weren’t even on first-name terms,” says Reed. Proechel, who is from Upstate New York, joined the Marines in 1997. During his four years of active service, he served in 19 countries and was discharged two days before the attacks of September 11, 2001. Reed, who is from Tennessee, was discharged in the summer of 2002. His four-year stint included serving in 14 countries and three weeks at Gitmo, the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Now best friends/designers, the designing marines have learned by doing. Proechel learned to use a sewing machine while Reed experimented with fabric paint. “ We wanted to use our initials P and R. Poetic rage is an interesting oxymoron. Everybody has a poetic side and a rage side, a light and dark side,” says Reed.

What would be a really good poem to imitate?
I need to write an imitation poem on two poems. I already did one of them. When I say imitation poems, I mean like what kind of poem would be really easy to use the same idea as to write another poem similar. For example, I did my first imitation on the Carl Sandburg poem “Chicago” and wrote an imitation about a famous city. Give me a poem like with that idea.

Poetry4Jesus will hold its first poetry contest. Submissions will be accepted beginning August 15th 2006 and will end Nov 15th 2006. The winners will be announced on Dec 15th. There are two prizes of $ 500 each. Plaques will be awarded to 2nd and 3rd places- the poem must be your original work – no prior copyrighted poetry will be accepted (will accept poetry if it has only been published on the poetry4jesus site). Category is Inspirational. There is a $ 10 per poem entry fee.

What is a good concrete poem with assonance and onomatopoeia?
a concrete poem is a poem in the shape of whatever u are writing about. assonance is the repetition of the same middle vowel soundin two or more closely grouped words. onomatopoeia is the use of a word to sound like or imitate what it describes.

To begin with, a concrete poem is not a poem in the shape of whatever you are writing about, in that case you would be talking about a poem with typography similar to the shape of what one is writing about. Concrete poetry is all about being laconic (making one’s point in few words, yet full in meaning). As far as being in need of a poem with assonance, check out “The world is too much with us” by William Wordsworth, even though I doubt it has any onomatopoiea words. Onomatopoiea words is mostly a concept that concerns linguistics and you are unlikely to find many poems containing such words, perhaps take a look at “The Waste Land” by T.S. Eliot, if i recall correctly, he makes use of a few words of the kind.

I need to write a poem, but need more information on the format of a Blues poem or Affirmation poem. What exactly is a blues and affirmation poem? HELP!

Poetic Form: Blues Poem

One of the most popular forms of American poetry, the blues poem stems from the African American oral tradition and the musical tradition of the blues. A blues poem typically takes on themes such as struggle, despair, and sex. It often (but not necessarily) follows a form, in which a statement is made in the first line, a variation is given in the second line, and an ironic alternative is declared in the third line.

African-American writer Ralph Ellison said that although the blues are often about struggle and depression, they are also full of determination to overcome difficulty “through sheer toughness of spirit.” This resilience in the face of hardship is one of the hallmarks of the blues poem.

Some of the great blues poets include Sterling A. Brown, James Weldon Johnson, and Langston Hughes. The title poem of Hughes’ first book, The Weary Blues, is also an excellent example of a blues poem. It begins:

“Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,
Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon,
I heard a Negro play.
Down on Lenox Avenue the other night
By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light
He did a lazy sway . . . “Another example is Brown’s poem “Riverbank Blues,” which begins:

“A man git his feet set in a sticky mudbank,
A man git dis yellow water in his blood,
No need for hopin’, no need for doin’,
Muddy streams keep him fixed for good.”Contemporary poet Kevin Young is continuing the tradition; his most recent book, Jelly Roll, is a collection that draws heavily on the blues tradition. Young is the editor of the recent anthology, Blues Poems.

How can we define tragedy, and what is the artistic purpose of it? Is there one “ideal” kind of drama? What is the nature of poetry? How consciously should poets and playwrights construct their work? All these questions, and others, are discussed and debated in this, perhaps the single most significant text in Western critical tradition. Writers, actors, students of literature, and armchair philosophers will find it a challenging—and rewarding—read.The original, Aristotle’s short study of storytelling, written in the fourth century B.C., is the world’s first critical book about the laws of literature. Sure, it’s 2400 years old, but Aristotle’s discussions–Unity of Plot, Reversal of the Situation, Character–though written in the context of ancient Greek Tragedy, Comedy and Epic Poetry, still apply to our modern literary forms.
