Aristotle’s Poetics is a broad philosophy of drama. In it he defines three major genres: the epic, the tragedy, the comedy. Of the three, he examines the tragedy the closest. Aristotle defines four precepts for the tragedy: nobleness, harmartia, peripetia, and anagnorisis. Nobleness by virtue of birth elevates the stature of the story’s hero or protagonist. Harmartia is his tragic flaw. Peripetia is the hero’s downfall. And anagnorisis is the unknown discovery tied to his harmartia and exposed through his peripetia.
This pattern is everywhere in the movies. For example George Lucas, in Star Wars Episode 4, creates nobleness in Luke Skywalker. He’s the unknown son to Queen Amadala and Anikan Skywalker (now Darth Vadar). His stature is elevated but at the time we don’t know it. He has a tragic flaw. Luke is impetuous characterized by his unwillingness to complete is Jedi training. He suffers peripetia (a reversal of fortune) when his father strikes him down, cutting off his arm in Episode 5. His peripetia is a direct result of his tragic flaw (harmartia). Luke suffers a dark night of the soul where he examines his nature of being. And finally his anagnorisis (discovery) comes when he realizes that Darth Vador is his father, and the Emperor bids him to replace his father at his side (a touch of Oedipus here too. Oedipus Rex is the classical example of the tragic hero). This revelation shocks the audience and the drama reveals itself. The hero, now absolved of his harmartia, can resolve the underpinning conflict.
